Brian Cameron and Archie Macphee played in both legs of the 2012 defeat to Albion Rovers and the loss to Clyde four years later.

Five years on from their last play-offs appearance, the Black and Whites are bidding to reach their first final with Edinburgh standing in their way.

The latest tale of two Cities begins at Borough Briggs on Saturday before moving to Ainslie Park in the capital on Tuesday night.

Stranraer meet Dumbarton in the other semi-final, with Dumbarton's fate in the play-offs sealed by Clyde's 2-1 win over East Fife last night.

Ross Jack was Elgin City's manager when they reached the play-offs for the first time in 2011-12.

That year, City finished fourth in Division 3 behind Alloa, Queen's Park and Stranraer, and faced an Albion Rovers side which finished second bottom of Division 2.

The Black and Whites had St Johnstone loan keeper Zander Clark in fine form between the sticks - nine years on Clark is Saints first choice and a recent Scottish Cup hero against Rangers.

Another former Saint, Mark Durnan - now at Falkirk - was also on loan at City along with Alex Cooper, son of late Aberdeen legend Neale, who was farmed out by Ross County at the time.

The return leg in Coatbridge on the Saturday saw Elgin hold their lead until the closing half hour, before goals by John Gemmell and a last minute Scott Chaplain goal edged Rovers through.

Cameron started at number six in both games with Macphee - who was on loan from Ross County at the time - coming on as sub in both games.

Albion lost the play-off final to Stranraer and were relegated as a result.

In 2016, current Elgin manager Gavin Price was assistant to Jim Weir when they finished runners-up to East Fife in League 2, and faced third-placed Clyde.

A Kyle Macleod goal was a mere crumb of comfort for Elgin City in their 2016 play-off defeat.

Managed by former Scotland and Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson, the Bully Wee hosted the first leg and won 3-1.

John Gemmell, who scored for Albion in Elgin's previous play-off defeat, opened Clyde's account at Broadwood before a stunning Scott Linton strike made it 2-0.

Kyle MacLeod - currently at Buckie Thistle - pulled one back with a fine header but Mark McLaughlin added a third for the home side.

A crowd of 1371 saw the second leg at Borough Briggs, where a superb Jordan Kirkpatrick free kick and a stoppage time Linton goal eased Clyde through 5-1 on aggregate.

Current Elgin favourite Darryl McHardy was an unused substitute in both Clyde games in 2016.

Clyde were defeated by Queen's Park in the final and ended up back in League 2 with Elgin the following season.
