PEOPLE interested in getting involved with basketball are being encouraged to sign up for a session taking place in Elgin at the start of October.

Moray Mavericks, formerly known as Elgin Eagles, will be delivering a workshop at Elgin High School on Tuesday, October 3, from 5pm until 7pm.

The workshop is being run in partnership with Moray Active Schools. Coaches will be Graham Stewart, a former national squad coach, and Jamie Alexander, a Scottish Basketball Level Two qualified coach.

Stewart explained that the aim of the workshop is to introduce new people to the sport and increase their confidence.

The session is free and open to everyone aged 14 and above.

“It’s ideal for people who are looking to learn more about the sport,” he said.

“The idea is to increase the ability of those that are keen to get involved with basketball. There will be different skills and drills. It’s open for people aged 14 upwards.”

This practical-based workshop is designed to teach those taking part technical skills while building their basic tactical understanding using games. It will also give the candidate the knowledge and ability to Game Coach.

Stewart, who originally formed Elgin Eagles around 15 years ago, is now also secretary of the newly-named Mavericks.

There are around 30 players attending sessions across a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the minute – with plans for one-day festivals in and around Moray.
