Buckie will play in the SFL Challenge Cup next season.

BUCKIE Thistle are getting ready to take on the cream of the Scottish League after being handed a place in next season's Challenge Cup.

Club chairman Mark Duncan said he was looking forward to Jags making history when they join the 30 SFL teams in the first round draw next week.

As a reward for taking part in the SFA's club licensing scheme, the Highland League was awarded two places in the competition following a motion at a Scottish League meeting on Thursday.

As Highland League champions Buckie were automatically entered into the cup alongside runners-up Deveronvale.

President Duncan said: "It's great news for the Highland League as well as our club and we're delighted to be involved in this cup.

"It will be another chapter in Buckie Thistle's history when we play our first match, and should make for an exciting start to our season."

Duncan added that his club had made "slow but steady" progress towards meeting the quality standards which the SFA set out for gaining a National Club License.

Buckie and Deveronvale could draw recent Scottish Cup finalists Ross County, Dundee or former Highland League foes Elgin City and Peterhead, when the first round draw is made.
