SYMPATHETIC boss Graham McBeath praised his players despite seeing them gunned down at Buckie Thistle on Wednesday night.

McBeath believes the 6-0 scoreline was harsh on his team who, he said, played well and didn’t deserve to be on the end of such a hiding.

However, he admitted they were guilty of poor defending and being the architects of their own misfortune for most of the Buckie goals.

Shawn Scott and Zander Sutherland had Buckie 2-0 up at half-time.

“We could have been 2-0 up ourselves before they scored, but all credit to Buckie, they were ruthless and that is why they have been champions the last two seasons,” said McBeath.

“We came in 2-0 down at half-time and I was thinking we were the better team. Buckie had a good 15 minute spell in the second half when they scored four goals.

“I thought we played well and I was frustrated with the scoreline. We finished the stronger side.”

McBeath admitted his players, while continuing to run for 90 minutes, look mentally tired and he believes that injuries and suspensions, which again contrived to leave them with just two subs at Victoria Park, have taken a toll.

“The likes of Stuart Massie hasn’t been the player he was last season and that is because I probably needed to take him out of the team earlier in the season to get his energy back.”

McBeath was missing on-loan Elgin City youngster Ruaridh Watt, who was laid low by a bug, and Ashley Grant and Matty Fraser, ruled out by work and college commitments respectively.

They should all come back into the equation for the trip to Formartine tomorrow (Saturday).
