GREGG Carrol is not one for mincing his words.
The boss’s blunt assessment of Buckie Thistle’s performance in the Scottish Cup draw at East Stirling was summed up by one word.
“Rubbish” was the straight-talking Carrol’s brutally honest appraisal.
“We didn’t play well at all. We were just rubbish, but too often people try to look into it and analyse it.
“We are still in the cup and that’s the most important thing.”
East Stirling, struggling near the foot of the third division, had taken the lead three minutes into the second half through Andy Stirling.
However, within six minutes Buckie were back on level terms after Michael Hunter diverted a Donnie Munro free kick into his own net.
Despite not playing well, the Highland League side had a great chance to win the tie when they were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds of the game.
Shire had two players sent off. One for kicking Chris Angus, causing the penalty award, and another for protesting too strongly about the penalty award. Zander Sutherland took the responsibility, but saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by keeper Calum Antell.
“We could have won it at the end but we missed the penalty. That’s the way it goes some times,” said Carrol.
Last year, Buckie had crashed out 1-0 to the same opponents in a game which saw Jags’ Ian Murray sent off for fighting with team-mate Graeme Stewart
East Stirling were subsequently thrown out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player.
Many will make Buckie strong favourites now to take their place in the third round with a replay at Victoria Park to come on Saturday.
