THE fickle nature of the beautiful game made itself all too apparent when Buckie Ladies made the trip to Nairn on league duty on Sunday.
Tuesday saw the Buckie side make history when they completed the league and cup double without even having to kick a ball in anger. Just three points were needed for Buckie Ladies to claim their first Highlands and Islands League crown, but Caley's 2-1 defeat of title challengers Clach was enough to see Mel Smith's side crowned champions.
The trip to Nairn, however, was not quite the celebration envisaged, a depleted visitors’ squad coming back down to earth with something of a bump in the shape of a 6-0.
Smith said: “I really felt for the quines, we were hit hard by injuries and just had the one centre back, who only lasted four minutes before she had to go off.
“Nairn got their tactics spot on to take advantage of this, playing the long ball game with two fast strikers up top.
“We had a lot of players playing out of position as well, and I’ve got to give credit to them for battling away despite the odds. All credit to Nairn, they played very well.”
Buckie now have two games left of their league campaign, the first being their last home game this Sunday when they are due to face Brora at the all-weather pitch, kick-off 2pm. The league trophy is set to be presented at the match.
The week after will see Buckie Ladies bring the curtain down on their season with a trip away to play Sutherland, details to be confirmed.
