Penalty drama as Buckie Thistle advance in Aberdeenshire Cup, while Rothes thrash Strathspey Thistle and Lossiemouth are well beaten
BUCKIE Thistle's first game after their trip to Celtic Park saw them come through a dramatic penalty shoot-out to win against Banks O' Dee.
The Jags were forced to give up home advantage due to ongoing drainage issues at Victoria Park and instead travelled to Spain Park in Aberdeen on Wednesday.
After a 0-0 draw, the Jags won 4-3 on penalties with Joe McCabe firing the winning spot-kick in via the post. Ex Elgin City goalkeeper Daniel Hoban was sent off for the hosts on 75 minutes.
Buckie travel to local rivals Deveronvale in the next round of the cup on Wednesday, February 7.
Elsewhere last night, Rothes thrashed Speyside rivals Strathspey Thistle 8-2 at Mackessack Park.
The bottom-of-the-table visitors led 1-0 and 2-1 in the first half at Mackessack, scoring either side of a Michael Finnis penalty.
Gary Kerr equalised for the hosts before half-time and then Rothes ran riot after the turnaround – scoring six unanswered goals to record a huge win, their first since November 25.
Michael Finnis scored two further penalties – netting a hat-trick of spot-kicks – while transfer-listed forward Aidan Wilson hit a brace.
Bailey Paxton and Jake Thomson added further goals to round-off a hammering win for the hosts.
Lossiemouth, who were winners against Rothes at the weekend, were well beaten by Nairn County at Station Park.
Ross Paterson's 20-yard effort proved to be scant consolation for the Coasters as a hat-trick from Elgin City loanee Ben Barron, Angus Dey and Ciaran Young gave the home side a 5-1 success.
