But the big winner was beaten finalist Adam Macleod, whose storming finish saw him storm to the top of the rankings and take the SEPF Region 4 title.

Most of the seeded players came through the early stages, with only two-time finalist and number 7 seed Andrew Cormie (Burghead) coming a cropper against Elgin’s Ally Grant.

Fyffe began to cue well from the quarter-finals onwards, beating No 2 seed Adam Wood, from Lossie, on a decider. He was joined in the semi-finals by Mark Bell, who overcame stiff opposition in Gordon Moir (Burghead), defeating him 4-1. MacLeod saw off Alan Mair 4-2 to line up another clash with Tony McCallion, who knocked out Grant 4-3., and set up a match which would effectively be a play-off to determine the top three places in the rankings for the season.

The first semi saw Fyffe demolish Bell 5-0 and Macleod secured top spot in the rankings with a comprehensive 5-2 victory over McCallion.

The final was a good battle that was all about potting; very little tactical play was required. With the match poised at 5-4 to Fyffe, Macleod somehow contrived to miss a very simple opportunity force a decider, leaving a thin cut on the black for Fyffe to win the match and the Moray County Championship silverware.

Macleod’s consolation was top slot in Region 4, which qualifies him outright for the 2012 SEPF Scotland team. A Scotland trial place is given to those who finish in positions 2-9 in the rankings, and this will be held later this year. That will see Adam Wood, Tony McCallion, Peter Fyffe, Mark Bell, Neil Simpson, Andrew Cormie, Stuart Campbell and Raymond Mackenzie all playing for an international place.
