ELGIN City crashed out of the Scottish Communities League Cup 2-1 at East Fife.

After their cup heroics at Dingwall last Saturday, Elgin went into this clash at New Bayview in confident mood.

And they started brightly, almost scoring after 10 minutes. Mark Nicolson's close range header was saved by keeper Mark Ridgers.

City again went close two minutes after half-time when Paul Kaczan's header was tipped over by Ridgers.

East Fife broke the deadlock on the mark when Ryan Wallace's cross was converted by Robert Ogleby.

Wallace then made it 2-0 after 72 minutes.

Elgin's fighting qualities came to the fore a minute later when Brian Cameron pull one back.

And they almost grabbed an equaliser five minutes later but Craig Gunn was denied by Ridgers.

Manager Ross Jack told 'The Scot': "We played extremely well and just carried on from where we left off at Ross County.

"We got caught with the long ball twice, the second one as we chased the game. We got right back in it with Soapy's goal and what chances we had after that.

"We just couldn't capitalise but it was a fantastic performance, everybody was outstanding.

"We have got to take heart from that but it was heartbreaking at the end," he added.

City return to New Bayview on August 9 in the second round of the Ramsdens Cup.

They will open their division three campaign at home to Berwick Rangers next Saturday, August 6.
