SENSATIONAL Elgin City are proud leaders of Irn Bru Division Three after dumping Peterhead 3-1 at Balmoor.

The Black and Whites produced a stunning first half performance to stun the Blue Toon.

And with early leaders Annan Athletic slumping to their first defeat of the season, City are top on goal difference.

A high tempo start to the game saw Craig Gunn and Mark Nicolson put Elgin 2-0 up inside the opening eight minutes of the game.

And when defender Jamie Duff headed a third before the break, City's travelling fans were in dreamland.

Peterhead pulled one back early in the second half through Barry Sellars but Elgin never looked like relinquishing the lead.

A jubilant Ross Jack told 'The Scot': "It is an incredible feeling to be top of the league and something we thoroughly deserve.

"Myself and Barry (Wilson) are very proud of each and every one of the players.

"We were on the front foot from the word go and Peterhead couldn't live with us.

"Gunny is red hot at the moment and Mark Nicolson came up with an outstanding header for the second goal.

"Jamie Duff attacked the ball with another great header for the third."

Jack admitted his side were under the cosh for a spell in the second half but they weathered the storm and secured the points.

The only downside was a late sending off for Daniel Moore, who had been instrumental in creating the goals, for two yellow cards.

"We are top of the table on merit. We said before the game that this game would be a measure of how far we have come this season.

"To go to Balmoor and beat them so convincingly was amazing," added Jack.

City now go into a massive match next Saturday at home to Clyde determined to hang onto top spot.
