THERE was European Championship disappointment for Moray athlete Mark Dry.

The Burghead hammer thrower was in action on Thursday afternoon in the qualifying groups of the men's competition.

He was the first GB male hammer thrower to qualify for the championships in 22 years.

However, Dry (24) failed to make it through to the final after three qualification throws.

Dry threw 69.32 metres in the first round, followed by a foul throw in the second.

And with his third and final throw he could only manage a distance of 70.27m.

The top six from each pool qualified for the final. The winner of Dry's group threw the hammer 76.42m, while the sixth place competitor achieved 73.01.

Dry's personal best is 74.82m, while last weekend at the GB Olympic trial he threw 74.32m.

He will now have to keep his fingers crossed that the UK selectors pick him for the sole remaining GB hammer place at London 2012. A decision is expected on Monday.

His rival for that Olympic place is Alex Smith who won the trial but must achieve the Olympic B standard a second time this weekend in order to be in contention. Dry has already achieved the standard four times.
