PAST records count for nothing as far as Elgin City manager Ross Jack is concerned as he prepares to visit his team’s bogey ground.

The Borough Briggs side make the long trip tomorrow (Saturday) to Berwick Rangers’ Shielfield Park, a ground at which they have never won.

In 13 previous trips to the Borderers’ home, City have drawn just twice and lost 11, including 6-2 and 4-0 crushings there last season.

“But I’m not a great lover of past histories,” Jack insists. “It’s all about what we’re going to do in the future, so we’re going there with a positive attitude and to make sure we come back with a victory.”

Elgin go to Berwick in good fettle after completing their October programme of fixtures unbeaten. They beat Fraserburgh in the cup 5-2 last Saturday, following a goalless draw in Buchan, hammered Alloa 5-0 and earned a fine 1-1 draw away to leaders Annan.

But last week’s cup commitments meant the Moray men slid out of the play-off positions, with Queen’s Park leaping into the top four with a 3-2 success at Stranraer.

They have two opportunities to make up ground on the chasing pack, as Saturday’s Berwick visit is quickly followed by the re-arranged home match against Montrose on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Berwick don’t have their troubles to seek after crashing 4-0 at Highland League Deveronvale in their last outing, a result which led to manager Jimmy Crease stepping down. The Borderers have yet to name a replacement, and are likely to have caretaker boss Ian Little in charge for Elgin’s visit.

They might have had the upper hand over Elgin on home soil, Berwick but came a cropper in their last meeting with the North side at Borough Briggs. City won 4-1 in the opening league match of this season, with striker Craig Gunn netting all four goals for the home team.

Jack is targeting two victories in the next seven days, and with a trip to bottom of the league East Stirling to follow there’s every chance the Black and Whites could be breathing down the back of leaders Annan’s necks come the middle of the month.
