TWO Kane Hester goals earned Elgin City victory in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy over Hibernian's development team, made up mainly of under-18s.

But three Highland League clubs in action all lost by a 1-0 margin and exited the competition at the first hurdle.

At Christie Gillies Park, home of Civil Service Strollers, Elgin took on a young Hibs eleven in the same way they did in the same tournament two years ago.

They won 4-3 in 2019 and led at the break when Hester finished off a Conor O'Keefe lob with a tap-in.

Hester chipped in with his own second five minutes after the interval but the young Hibees weren't out of it.

They forced some good saves out of City keeper Tom McHale and were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes, but Connor Young's kick clipped the outside of the post and went wide.

Home dangerman Murray Aiken did score for the Hibs kids in a late scramble but Elgin held on to land a home tie against Dunfermline Athletic in round two on September 4.

Formartine United were just edged out by League Two Forfar Athletic, Matty Aitken's 12th minute strike proving to be the only one of the night.

Fraserburgh held another League Two side, Cowdenbeath for 90 minutes but in the first minute of stoppage time, Liam Buchanan struck for the Fifers to shatter Broch's hopes.

Brora Rangers took on Aberdeen's B team at Dudgeon Park and lost 1-0.

The young Dons had Finn Yeats sent off midway through the second half but within five minutes netted the only goal through Michael Ruth.

The two remaining Highland League teams meet tonight with Brechin City hosting Buckie Thistle.

The winners are away to Caley Thistle in round two.
