ELGIN City assistant manager Jim Weir praised striker Kane Hester after his spectacular four-goal haul against Annan Athletic on Saturday.

Hester put Elgin ahead inside seven minutes, teed up Dylan Lawrence to score the second before half-time and then slammed in a second half hat-trick in a convincing 5-1 win.

City assistant Weir said Hester's display was probably the best individual showing he's seen from a forward in his time coaching.

"When you have got someone like Kane Hester, and young Dylan Lawrence, with that type of pace you are always going to cause teams problems," he said.

"I thought with Dylan Lawrence's first half performance it was going to be hard to beat that, but you see what Hester gives you.

"It's probably the best individual striking performance I've witnessed from the touchline so credit to him and the rest of the players.

"It was important that we built on last week's win at Peterhead."

Hester had to be in the right place at the right time to score just the second headed goal of his career for 1-0, before tenacious work in winning the ball back teed up Lawrence to make it 2-0.

His second goal was a goal of the season contender, with a volley dipping over goalkeeper Allan Fleming and in just after half-time, before two goals late on secured the first four-goal haul of his City career.

"Kane terrorises and frightens defenders with his pace," Weir added. "At times he can look frustrating because he can look disinterested but one thing about Hester is you never get a minute to switch off.

"The third goal, which he takes over his shoulder when the goalie is coming out, it's just a wonderful finish. It was fitting that he got the four goals."

Next up for City is a trip to Stranraer on Saturday, who moved into the top four with a 2-1 win over bottom club Albion Rovers, who City face on Tuesday.

"If we keep working hard and believing in the group of players, stay free of injury and keep our discipline, then we will be a threat to anybody this year," Weir added.

"Stranraer is always a difficult place to go. They're a club that have always managed to attract good players.

"But we have only lost one game in about 10 so we'll go there with confidence, we'll not get carried away, we'll need to put in the same effort in as we have in the last few weeks to go and hopefully get a result.

"You can never write off Albion Rovers. They always come up with results and have a group of players that work hard for the football club.

"They went to Bonnyrigg and won and got a draw at Stirling but we will look at that when that game comes."
