WE can beat the best in Division 3 – now let’s do it more regularly.

That’s the challenge issued by Elgin City manager Ross Jack after his team achieved one of the club’s best-ever Scottish League results on Saturday.

A thumping 5-0 success over Paul Hartley’s Alloa, who were challenging for top spot after winning their previous four fixtures, was a massive result for the Borough Briggs’ men.

City have risen to the heights with impressive league wins over Berwick, Peterhead and Queens Park, but surprisingly slumped against so-called lesser lights like Montrose and Clyde.

And manager Jack want his squad to produce a steady flow of results to help them maintain their place among the Division 3 promotion protagonists.

“It was an outstanding result against a very good Alloa team,” Jack reflected. “But we need to be more consistent.

“When you think of the highs we’ve reached against Ross County in the cup, the win at Peterhead and the great start we had in the league when we beat Berwick, it’s been very encouraging. But then we had the lows when we were terrible against Montrose and Clyde.

“We need to show the same attitude and produce the same work rate as we did against Alloa.”

That will certainly be the case for Elgin’s next fixture, a long trip to Annan to visit the league leaders, who are five points clear at the top with a 100% record on home soil.

After last weekend’s inspiring five-goal win, you would be forgiven for thinking the Annan clash couldn’t come quickly enough for the Black and Whites.

But due to Scotland’s international match in Liechtenstein there is a blank SFL card this weekend, and Jack’s men must wait until next Saturday for their sternest league test to date.
