PRIDE usually comes before a fall, but Elgin City boss Ross Jack has challenged his wounded players to restore their pride following a devastating mauling at Queen’s Park.

Shell-shocked Jack admitted the players and management have been hurting badly following the 6-0 drubbing at Hampden.

Jack has pleaded with them not to abandon the team on Saturday as they bid to make amends at home to Berwick Rangers.

"We need the fans more than ever just now. We know we let them down but we are asking them to give us another chance at home, where our form has been really good," he said.

It would be going too far to say the Berwick game tomorrow is win or bust for Elgin, but it has taken on massive significance in the wake of the defeat by promotion rivals Queen’s Park.

City simply have to get their promotion challenge back on track before the top four start disappearing over the horizon.

Jack admits there will be doubters, both inside and outwith Borough Briggs, as to whether City are now credible promotion challengers.

"A lot of people will be writing us off, but they should do that at their peril. If they don’t see us as promotion contenders now that suits us fine.

"The top four play each other this weekend so that is a chance for us to recover some ground.

"After the Berwick game we are still only halfway through the season and there are a hell of a lot of points at stake.

"The first quarter of the season was very good and the second quarter has been behind expectations.

"We still have the second half of the season to make sure we show our promotion credentials and prove we are worthy of a promotion play-off place," said Jack.
