ELGIN City are in real relegation trouble after losing a bottom of the table crunch game at Cowdenbeath.

Matthew Cooper conceded the early penalty which gave Cowdenbeath the lead.

City slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat 2-0 at the side bottom of Cinch League Two.

A second minute penalty from Fraser Mullen, conceded by Matty Cooper, and a 90th minute strike by Andrew Barrowman sealed the points for Maurice Ross's side.

The result leaves the Fifers six points behind Elgin but, crucially, they have three games in hand.

The Fifers have won three of their last five games, while Elgin's horrible run of results shows no signs of abating.

Gavin Price was manager of the month for January but since beating leaders Kelty Hearts 2-0, the Borough Briggs side's form has deserted them.

The only crumb of comfort for Elgin is that Cowdenbeath face tough away games at leaders Kelty Hearts on Tuesday night and promotion-chasing Edinburgh City next Friday, before Elgin welcome Stirling Albion to Borough Briggs.

However, the slump in form at a critical time in the season is alarming.
