Elgin City slumped to their heaviest home defeat of the season as League 2 leaders Dumbarton romped home at Borough Briggs.

Thomas McHale was in goal for City with Daniel Hoban still feeling the effects of a bug, while Caley Thistle loanee Lewis Nicolson was suspended.

Ex-Elgin keeper Brett Long denied his former club an early goal with a terrific save from Kane Hester’s close range effort and the rebound shot from Russell Dingwall, after Dylan Lawrence created the chance down the right on seven minutes.

Dumbarton counter-attacked from the corner and Kalvin Orsi swapped passes with Aron Lynas before screwing his shot wide from good position.

It was the league leaders who drew first blood on 25 minutes as Elgin failed to pick up striker Ross MacLean from Kalvin Orsi’s pass and he slipped the ball wide of McHale.

There was controversy five minutes before half time when City skipper Ross Draper drove into the box and looked to have been fouled by Aron Lynas, but instead of a spot kick there was a yellow card for an alleged dive by the home player.

Elgin needed to come up with a big second half performance but their challenge took a telling blow when they conceded again on 52 minutes.

Ex-Rangers man Gregg Wylde all-too-easily skipped past a couple of home defenders and finished well past McHale.

It was game over when the Sons netted for a third time on 74 minutes, Lynas crashing home from the edge of the box after an Orsi cross spun kindly into his path.

Sub Ryan Wallace added some gloss to the win with a fine low strike from the edge of the box in the final minute.
