Elgin City interim chairwoman Isla Benzie says the club are investigating an email row which has led to the club losing a major sponsorship deal.

Local businessman and club director Stephen Scott resigned his position on the Borough Briggs board and withdrew as a shirt sponsor for the Elgin City ladies team after making allegations that he was subject to an abusive club email.

Mr Scott claimed a fellow board member said he could stick his sponsorship "up his a**e" in a message to other board members where he had been accidentally copied in.

Mrs Benzie said she could not comment on the validity of the email but promised that the club would investigate the matter.

It is understood that the Gleaner money, which had been part of a six-figure shirt sponsorship deal for City, was not part of new manager Ross Draper’s budget to improve the team’s squad for the coming season.

Electrical contractors McDonald & Munro have been City’s main sponsors for many years, with their name being on the men’s team’s shirt for the past few seasons.

Gleaner has stepped in to back the newly-formed ladies team at the club but their money has now been withdrawn.

Mrs Benzie said Elgin had been grateful for Gleaner’s support and was confident that local businesses would continue to support their SPFL club.

“We are very grateful for Gleaner’s sponsorship over the years,” she said. “We are disappointed that this has happened. There will be an investigation.

"We are very fortunate as a club that we are supported by a large number of local businesses extremely well and that will continue."
