Annan had the first sniff of goal when Tyler Fulton was denied by a good Tom McHale save.

Russell Dingwall forced a fine save out of Alex Mitchell at the other end, while Annan had a penalty claim rejected when Fulton went down under a McHale challenge.

A sweeping Elgin move led to a 37th minute opening goal.

Tony Dingwall started the move, working the ball out to the left to Conor O'Keefe whose pace took him past his man and a low cross was finished by Dingwall, who started the move.

It was also the former Ross County man's first goal in Elgin colours.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Kane Hester's effort fell to Brian Cameron to shoot past Mitchell.

It could easily have been 3-0 to City at the break had Mitchell not pulled off an acrobatic save to deny Hester.

Annan were certainly not out of the game with Aiden Smith and former Elgin player Nathan Flanagan going close after the break.

But ex-Annan man Smart Osadolor, who had replaced Tony Dingwall midway through the second half, capitalised on a defensive error to run through and seal City's win in stoppage time.

It was Osadolor's first goal of the season, while Elgin also picked up their first defensive clean sheet of the year.

The win was enough to take Elgin up the table above Stirling, who lost 1-0 to leaders Queen's Park.

Next game for the Black and Whites is on Tuesday night at home to Stranraer.

Elgin: McHale, Cooper, Spark, McHardy, Bronsky, Macphee, R. Dingwall (Mailer 81), Cameron, Hester (Peters 72), T. Dingwall (Osadolor 66), O'Keefe (Sopel 81). Subs: Brown, Wilson, Dalling, Miller, Kelly.
