AFTER a rare off-day in front of goal, Elgin City striker Kane Hester plans to take his frustration out on Cowdenbeath this afternoon.

Hester couldn’t find the net in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Stranraer in City’s League Two opener despite a string of good opportunities.

The normally deadly frontman said he will take his blank scoresheet hard this week and plot a course for the back of the net at Central Park in Fife tomorrow.

“My days like that are quite rare to be honest,” he said. “I’ve had so many chances, usually I have fewer than that and I still take something, but I’ve had five or six today and didn’t score any of them.

“So in terms of myself, I’m very disappointed and hopefully I can rectify it next week.

“I will be thinking about it all week, but all I’m really thinking about is my next goal because I’ve had so many chances. I will beat myself up about it then I will go into next week, raring for a goal.”

Hester is Elgin’s fourth-top Scottish League goalscorer with 43 goals in 78 appearances, having struck 19 in each of the past two shortened campaigns.

He netted in the Premier Sports Cup at Dundee United and East Fife and was eager to kick off the league campaign with another goal.

Stranraer were the better team at Borough Briggs in the first half of Saturday’s opener, despite Darryl McHardy’s header giving City the interval lead.

Hester was denied by a save midway through the half and volleyed over from a corner just before the break.

He had a penalty claim rejected by ref Lorraine Watson in the second half, and produced a series of shots on goal, particularly in the last 20 minutes when Elgin stepped up their efforts following Grant Gallagher’s headed equaliser for Stranraer.

A typically pacy run and low drive was smothered by keeper Curtis Lyle, which a flashing near post effort from a Conor O’Keefe cut back spun agonisingly wide.

Hester also carved out a couple of chances for sub Josh Peters, who headed on straight at Lyle and sent the other over the target as Elgin couldn’t find a winner.

“We look sharper out there. You look at the last 20 minutes, we have outplayed them,” Hester added.
