With a trip to SPL Motherwell waiting the winners of this replay, it was the Hampden side who booked their place in the fourth round.

The Moray men trailed 2-0 at half-time after goals from David Murray (11) and Craig Smith (43).

Things got worse ten minutes after the restart when goalkeeper Zander Clark was shown a red card for a foul on Jamie Longworth.

However, the ten men pulled one back 16 minutes from the end through top scorer Craig Gunn.

And they had chances to equalise through Jamie Duff, Gunn and Paul Millar but the Queens Park keeper produced some good saves.

Smith killed off any hopes Elgin had of forcing extra-time when he added a third in the 87th minute.

Manager Ross Jack said: "We just couldn't get the second goal and then we got hit with a killer third late on.

"It was a poor first half performance. We shot ourselves in the foot with the goals we lost.

"The effort, commitment and willingness to get back in the game when we were down to ten men was fantastic.

"I will praise the players for the way they played in the majority of the second half but I can't accept the first half display.

"That is our first defeat in nine games and if we can go on another run like that we will keep ourselves near the top of the league.

"We have to pick ourselves up for a big game against Stranraer next weekend.

"We will have to work hard to keep ourselves in the promotion pack."
