Darryl McHardy says he has nothing to prove to Elgin City in his Rothes loan spell.

City boss Gavin Price farmed his former captain out to the Speysiders last week, claiming he missed training and took holidays while recovering from a recent shoulder injury.

Price said McHardy (24) was put out on loan for his own good but insisted the player had a future at Borough Briggs if he returns fully committed to the cause.

McHardy admitted he was shocked by his manager’s decision but plans to work hard at Rothes to get fitter after an injury-hit campaign.

He feels with more than 200 appearances for Elgin, scoring 35 goals, the Black and Whites fans value his contribution to the club.

“I don’t think I need to prove people wrong,” he said. “I think everyone knows my ability and what I’ve done for Elgin in the past.

“It’s a case of what the manager thinks. I will just get myself back to as fit as I can be and playing as well as I can so I’ve got a good platform in the summer to see where I go from there.

“Elgin is the club I’ve always wanted to play for and I’ve been proud to captain. We will just have to wait and see where I am next season.

“I was chuffed to hear about their win on Saturday and they just need to keep it going and try to make the play-offs. That’s the target and I think it will be a bit of a disaster for the club if they don’t make it this year.”

McHardy had a baptism of fire in his first Rothes start on Saturday as they lost 5-0 at Inverurie Locos.

“Locos played at a good standard to be fair. For the Brora and Inverurie games so far, the standard has been much and such the same as League Two. No disrespect to the rest of the Highland League, but I don’t think all my games at this level will be up to that standard.

“Obviously I know the manager Ross Jack from his time at Elgin and he’s been good to work with. I just want to get back to enjoying my football and I just need to make sure I’m doing well enough to get a starting slot.”
