ELGIN City are closing in on their fifth loan signing of the season.

Elgin City assistant boss Gavin Price says a Dundee loan signing could be on his way to Borough Briggs.
Elgin City assistant boss Gavin Price says a Dundee loan signing could be on his way to Borough Briggs.

Manager Jim Weir revealed last week how he was on the trail of an unnamed Dundee striker.

A deal didn’t come about in time for Saturday’s League 2 match against Berwick Rangers, but could happen this week.

City assistant boss Gavin Price said discussions are on-going with the Tayside club regarding an emergency loan to further strengthen Elgin’s attack.

"We are very hopeful that will still happen," said Price. "The squad is now getting stronger and we have real options from the bench.

"But I don’t think you can have enough striking options. To carry a season with two strikers is very difficult, because you are going to have times whether it’s injuries or lack of form when the strikers need to be replaced on occasions.

"The work rate that we expect from our strikers and wide players means they are the most likely positions to be substituted during the game.

"So it’s important that we’ve got quality to come on into these areas and probably to put pressure on each other as well to keep banging in the goals."

Elgin already have St Johnstone trio Mark Hurst, Liam Gordon and Connor McLaren on loan, along with Ross County front man Kyle MacLeod, all until January.

If their Dundee deal comes to fruition, the player can only be signed by Elgin for a maximum of 93 days as it is an emergency loan outwith the transfer window.

MacLeod and Craig Gunn currently hold the striking places in the City team, while last week they signed 21-year-old Thomas Reilly, who can also play in attack.

Weir and Price will hope to have their Dundee man on board in time for Saturday, when they aim to hold on to top spot in League 2 with a win away to Queen’s Park.
