ELGIN City have reached the quarter-finals of the Petrofac Training Cup after a superb extra time win at Alloa Athletic on Wednesday night.

Two penalty kicks by Craig Gunn and Marc McKenzie in either half of extra time earned Elgin a 2-0 win against last year’s finalists.

It is only the second time Elgin have reached the last eight of the competition in 16 years, and they will find out their next opponents in tomorrow’s draw.

The Moray men could face Rangers, who beat Ayr 2-0 on the same night, while St Mirren, Peterhead, Livingston, Dunfermline, Queen’s Park and Stenhousemuir will also go into the hat.

City recorded their third consecutive win, and their third defensive clean sheet in a row, by defeating their Championship opponents at the Indodrill Stadium.

They survived some heavy pressure in the first half with keeper Mark Hurst saving well from Michael Duffy.

Good Elgin defending kept Alloa at bay and the visitors almost snatched a second half goal when Darryl McHardy hit the post at a corner.

Alloa brought on former Newcastle, Sunderland and Cardiff star striker Michael Chopra as a substitute but he was unable to find a goal to prevent the game from going into extra time.

A minute before half time in extra time, Elgin were awarded a penalty for Mikk Reintam’s foul on Matthew Cooper.

Craig Gunn stepped up to score from the spot for his fifth goal of the season.

On 111 minutes the away side were awarded a second spot kick, and with Gunn substituted at half time the responsibility was given to Marc McKenzie, who also scored.

Jim Weir’s side held on until full-time for a great success, and now have a Saturday date in the quarter-finals to look forward to on October 10.

Elgin: Hurst, Cooper, Macphee, McHardy, Gordon, Nicolson, McKenzie, Cameron, Gunn (McLean 106), MacLeod (Bruce 120), Moore (Halsman 114).
