THE world's largest provider of six-a-side football is hopeful of setting up a new competition in Elgin.

Leisure Leagues want to start a competition at Lesser Borough Briggs once the facility has been built by Elgin Sports Community Trust.

If it goes ahead, it would see hundreds of local players taking part, with games on Sunday and Monday evenings.

Leisure Leagues director Tom Nash said: "The fact we can bring our unique brand of football to Elgin for the very first time is fantastic – especially at a time like this.

"The wonderful thing about these leagues is they are a real community hub. Some of our players are top class, while others might not have played football for a long time, it brings everyone together.”

ESCT chairman Dave Allen said there have been talks with Leisure Leagues, but stressed there is no completion date for the all-weather facility at Lesser Borough Briggs yet.

"We would like to accommodate them and have definitely had discussions, but it's very early days," he said.

"But this does show the community things we are doing. We are encouraging anyone – and certainly not just football – to use the facility."

There is a big prize for winners of Leisure League competitions, with entry into a prize draw to see them jet off to a game in one of Europe’s top leagues. There are also prizes for the runners-up and the most valuable player, with a booby prize for the bottom team.

Qualified referees all equipment provided, together with regular training from the likes of Mark Clattenburg, who is a Leisure Leagues Ambassador.

There will be more news in the coming weeks about a start date but Leisure Leagues have already made team entries available.
