ELGIN City have signed former Cowdenbeath midfielder Declan Byrne on amateur forms.

The 21-year-old had been on trial at City after returning to Scotland from a spell playing in Australia.

Byrne, who plays on the left side of midfield, comes straight into Elgin’s squad for their Scottish Cup tie at Dumbarton on Saturday.

Manager Gavin Price said: “He’s got a decent left foot and a good delivery. He’s a strong boy with a bit of a goal threat, so it’s a chance for him.”

Byrne played a handful of games for Cowdenbeath, scoring in a League 1 win at Stenhousemuir in February 2016

He had been playing for Elgin’s under-20s as a trialist in recent weeks.

He was part of a 7-3 City victory in the under-20s league on Monday night, where another player grabbed the headlines.

Striker Calum Ferguson, whose first team chances have been limited since signing from Albion Rovers in the summer, netted six goals in the victory in Inverness.

Ferguson came off the bench for the first team at Cowdenbeath last week and Price admitted the ex-Caley Thistle man is pushing hard for an opportunity to impress in League 2.

“His attitude has been first class and I watched him on Monday. If there’s a good way to bang on the door, that was the way to do it.”

Price will be without current loan trio Lewis Strapp (Morton), Bruce Anderson (Aberdeen) and Tony Dingwall (Ross County) for the Dumbarton cup match.
