A leg weary City were handed their first league defeat of the season, just days after a marathon cup win at Alloa in midweek.

Six teams are now joint top of League 2 on six points from 3 games, with Elgin leading the way by virtue of their better goal difference.

Jonathan Page opened the scoring for the Fifers from a 9 minute corner before Craig Gunn’s sixth strike of the season levelled midway through the first half.

Nathan Austin, who scored four goals in a game for East Fife against Elgin last season, grabbed the winner in the second half.

Had it not been for a string of saves by keeper Mark Hurst, City could have lost by more as the efforts of their Alloa cup shock took their toll.

Jim Weir’s side will look to return to winning ways when they host Stirling Albion in the league next weekend.

Elgin: Hurst, Cooper, McHardy, Gordon, Duff (Macphee 72), Nicolson, McKenzie, Cameron, Gunn (Hunter 78), MacLeod, Moore (Halsman 84). Subs: McLean, Bruce, Kennedy, Black.
