WINNING a bronze medal on the national figure skating arena has given a Banff Academy pupil a desire to strike gold one day.

Emilie Lawson (13) recently moved up to level three competitions, having won a string of silver medals at beginners’ level.

The move up the ranks and her dedication from training sessions in Aberdeen and Elgin paid off when she made the podium at a Dundee national competition against the best skaters in her age group from across Scotland.

“I was really pleased,” she said. “I skated to the Pirates of the Caribbean.

“I’ve never watched the film, I just like the music.”

Emilie took up her sport seven years ago and was a member of the Moray Figure Skating Club in Elgin, before switching to the Caledonia Ice Skating outfit in Aberdeen in April.

She even managed to continue her sport during the Covid-19 lockdown by representing Scotland in an off-ice skates tourney, performing a routine at a local industrial estate when the rinks were all closed. Emilie duly landed the bronze medal for her country.

“She has worked very hard and all her training and dedication is definitely paying off,” said mum Jennifer.

“Emilie competed in level one and narrowly missed out on a medal in Dundee last year.

“She finished in fourth place in Kirkcaldy in May then got her bronze medal in Dundee when she was the youngest in her group.

“She is training hard for competitions next year.”

Competitions take place all over Scotland and Emilie has set her sights on greater achievements.

“I travel a lot, the furthest I’ve been is Ayrshire but I might move on to England next year for a competition in Billingham.

“Hopefully I can win a gold medal one day.”
