ELGIN City boss Jim Weir is ready to unleash his latest loan signing on his former club Montrose this weekend.

Weir tied up a deal with St Johnstone to take attacking youngster Connor McLaren (18) on loan until January, and the former Celtic kid could start at Links Park on Saturday.

McLaren’s move to Elgin, with fellow Saint George Hunter quitting the Black and Whites after just a month to join Airdrie, was the only business done by the Elgin boss before the closure of the transfer window this week.

But Weir is still hopeful of bringing in a defender as cover, either a free agent he has been monitoring or an emergency loan option he still has available to him.

In the meantime, a fresh injury concern over winger Marc McKenzie has put new boy McLaren in line for a quickfire introduction in his place.

Weir explained how the deal came about this week to put Hunter back to St Johnstone and take McLaren instead.

“George hadn’t been playing in as many games as he had hoped, and coming from Musselburgh the travelling had obviously affected him,” Jim said. “He got injured in his first game against Hearts, then was unavailable due to a problem with his eye, while my other two strikers were doing well.

“Tommy Wright (St Johnstone manager) spoke to me about it and asked me ‘did I need George?’, and obviously I did need him with our squad being so tight.

“But Connor was a player I had kind of been interested in previously and Tommy was very kind to give us him.”
