City announced on Monday the departure of manager Barry Smith after just eight games in charge, having succeeded Ross Draper at the start of September.

It means the Black and Whites are searching for their fourth boss in seven months, having sacked Gavin Price in April.

The parting of the ways was revealed on Facebook and drew a wide range of comments from fans, many in disbelief at the news.

Some pointed the finger of blame at Elgin's board of directors while others were critical of Smith, who is understood to have stepped down due to increased work commitments.

"Looks like he probably didn't fancy the journey to Elgin 2/3 times a week in the winter," said Stewart Crockett.

"Well he was committed to the cause," was the opinion of Mark Lamont, while Will Brindley suggested: "Hopefully they take their time and get the right man for the job this time. Someone who wants to be here and get Elgin up the league."

Some posts defended the departing Smith and called for other people at the club to be held accountable for the mess.

Matt Rowe said: "Why does everyone always blame the manager? Yes, he decides who plays where but if the players don't put in 100% effort, no manager, no matter how good, can make a team win.

"The players have as much responsibility for their efforts as well."

"All the best Barry. Shame." said Mark Stitt, and Mike Thomson added: "Just when we were seeing his influence too," then suggested: "Need somebody local who can help with loans and/or know HFL players who could utilise it and want to step up."

One of two of the Facebook posts didn't hold back in their criticism of the directors.

"An absolute shambles of a Board," said Martin Stuart. "The SFA should place Elgin in protective administration and remove Tatters and Co from all control over a viable but extremely badly ran club."

He added: "Elgin could go bust under these people and not even make the Highland League."

Stephen McIntosh: "Absolute shambles of a club. Need to be back in the Highland League or they are not going to survive much longer."

Colin Ross suggested that board critics should step forward and show they can do better if they don't have faith in the current directors.

"The comments on shambolic board and administrational points is way over the top," he said. "Mistakes have been very costly for sure but plenty hard workers and good individuals around Borough Briggs.

"Those who are highly critical need to put themselves up for board nomination."
