ROSS Jack sang the praises of his Elgin City team after they thumped Alloa Athletic 5-0 with a sparkling show on Saturday.

Two Stuart Leslie penalties and a double by Graeme Beveridge helped City romp to win over an Alloa side which ended up having two players red carded.

Jack insisted the dismissals had little bearing on the result with his team already rampant in the first half.

“I just hope the two sendings off don’t take the gloss off this win because we were outstanding when it was eleven versus eleven in the first half,” he said.

“I’m absolutely proud of everyone out there after a performance like that. It was very, very encouraging.”

City were keen to bounce back after losing their last two matches, including an unlucky 1-0 defeat at Stranraer the previous weekend when the Moray men spurned a series of scoring opportunities.

Jack said: “To be fair we weren’t far away from a performance like that at Stranraer, we just didn’t get the goals that day. But they came today, and I’m delighted.”

Beveridge opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a neat header following a terrific cross from deep on the left by Daniel Moore.

Brian Cameron added number two shortly before the break with a goal of the season contender, running from the halfway line and cutting in before firing a left foot drive into the top corner.

Cameron was then fouled in the box in first stoppage time, leading to a red card for Alloa defender Mark Docherty and a spot kick which Leslie converted.

Leslie added a second penalty on 55 minutes, and the visitors were reduced to nine men when former City keeper Scott Bain was sent packing for two yellow cards in quick succession.

Alloa’s sub keeper Craig McDowall was beaten by the final goal on 78 minutes, a Beveridge cross which he misjudged and watched in horror as it dropped in at the far post.

City remain in fourth spot in Division 3 but will have the chance to close the gap at the top when they visit leaders Annan in their next match in a fortnight’s time.
