Forres Mechanics sign Cameron Ferguson - son of Duncan Ferguson - on permanent deal until the end of the season
FORRES Mechanics have completed the signing of striker Cameron Ferguson, the son of former Scotland international Duncan.
Ferguson (21) was released by English Premier League club Newcastle United in January and has since been on trial with Inverness Caledonian Thistle - where his dad is manager.
He joins Forres on a deal that runs until the end of the campaign, with the Can-Cans having five Highland League matches remaining.
The 6 ft 5 centre-forward spent the first half of this season on loan with Scottish League Two side Forfar Athletic, failing to score in 11 appearances, mostly from the bench.
But he has impressed in bounce games in an Inverness shirt and was involved in setting up several goals in a recent behind-closed-doors game against Mechanics, which Inverness won 5-0.
He was unable to sign for Caley Thistle due to a rule that prohibited him from playing for more than three clubs in a season. He had turned out for Newcastle, Newcastle’s under-21s and Forfar. These rules do not apply to Highland League clubs.
Speaking about his son earlier in March, Ferguson said: “He has great potential, in my eyes – but I’m his dad. I’ve got the blinkers on, but I’m a professional coach as well and Cameron is a good player.
“He’s big – 6ft 5, left-footed and technically as good as you’re going to get.
“He’s a typical target man, not blessed with a great amount of pace but good technically and a good finisher.”
Forres manager Steven MacDonald said: “We are all pleased to have Cameron joining us for the last five games of the season. Thank you to Inverness Caledonian Thistle for making it possible.
“Cameron has just turned 21 and has a huge football career ahead of him.
“He hasn't played in many matches recently so the priority is to help him get a few games under his belt before he steps back up into full-time football again”.
