FACING a frustrating year out of football, Forres Mechanics favourite Graham Fraser is taking small steps on the long road to recovery.

Like his twin brother Lee, Graham sustained a horror knee injury when he tore his right cruciate ligament, the injury every footballer dreads getting.

But recent surgery to replace the Burghead-based joiner’s ligament went well, and he is preparing for a slow but steady period of recuperation.

It will be at least six months before he kicks a ball again, and possibly a year according to the team who operated on him down in Glasgow two weeks ago.

“When I went to see a surgeon in Elgin, they told me it would be six months to get back to football. I was hopeful I could maybe get a bit of pre-season in the summer.

“But down in Glasgow they recommend up to a year. When I was told that I really couldn’t believe it. It was a shock.”

It was the Fraser twins’ 22nd birthday on Tuesday, though with Graham in crutches having been fitted with a leg brace, he was barely in the mood to celebrate.

He has the comfort of knowing that his brother spent 18 months on the sidelines after smashing his left kneecap in a training accident three years ago, but was able to return to full fitness.

“We kind of compare things because we’ve both had bad knee injuries,” Graham said. “But Lee came back fine so I’m sure I can do the same.
