THE Moray Snooker Handicap Trophy, newly-introduced this year, has been won by Gary Pope.

The Elgin Ex-Service player survived a deciding frame in the last-32, before going onto win the tournament.

A total of 36 players entered the tournament, which saw some entertaining matches in the early rounds.

Roy Muckart (147 Club) came though the prelim round against Gary Bryce (147 Club) by virtue of a 4-3 deciding frame win.

The stand-out match of the round of 32 saw eventual winner Gary Pope (Elgin Ex Service) survive a deciding frame beating James McKenzie (Forres Legion) 4-3 to progress.

Both players will be part of the Moray County A team travelling to Glasgow for the Scottish County Championships next month.

The last 16 saw Michael McCulloch back up an excellent performance in the last 32 to take out Moray County A vice captain Simon Bremner 4-2 to progress.

The quarter final saw comprehensive wins for Graham Podlesny (Banff) and Stephen Hepburn (Forres Legion) as they defeated Mark Bell (New Club 1) and Neil Stirling (Elgin Ex Service) respectively by comfortable score lines.

Finals day saw the semi final and final played out over one day at Forres Legion. Pope took a tight semi final win over McCulloch 4-2 whist it was Podlesny who got the better of Hepburn to progress. Pope’s 48 break was the pick of the contributions.

The final ended up being fairly one-sided and it was Pope who built on his Moray SuperLeague Championship victory in April to become the inaugural Moray Snooker Handicap Trophy champion 2022.
