Moray Golf Club hosted the first of a two-round qualifier on Saturday, with five places up for grabs at the European Tour event.

Hopeman amateur Godsman tamed his home course at Lossiemouth to shoot a four under par 67 and lie just one shot off the lead at the halfway point.

The Moray player birdied three of the first four holes and after dropping two shots, he grabbed an eagle at the 17 to finish in joint third position.

Leading the way after 18 holes are Ross Munro (Duddingston) and George Murray (Kingsbarns), who both carded a 66.

Murray’s round included nine birdies and a fine recovery after scoring a double bogey at Moray’s sixth hole.

Godsman shares third spot with Kris Nicol (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), while six players are tied for fifth equal place on three under.

First round scores

A strong crop of players are well placed at 2-under including Craig Lawrie, son of former Open champion Paul, former European Tour event winner Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle) and Peter Whiteford, a top 20 finisher in a previous Scottish Open.

Another Moray player well up the leaderboard is Rodger Clarke from the Golf Dedication Centre in Lossiemouth, who shot a level par 71.

And Forres amateur Jeff Wright, who also plays at Moray, recorded four birdies in his 72.

Another former winner on the European Tour, Englishman Jonathan Lomas started well with three birdies in the first four holes but proceeded to drop six shots for a three-over par 74.

Moray Golf Club’s Derek Ramsay carded a 75, bouncing back from a 7 at the second hole to birdie the 12 and 17.

He was matched by Elgin Golf Club professional Michael McAllan and former Moray player Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) on 75, while Lossiemouth golfer and current Peterculter pro Ross McConnachie shot a 76.
