SCORING a hole-in-one in his 80th year was a ‘magnificent’ feeling for Moray golfing ace Ernie Arkwright.
Playing in Garmouth & Kingston Golf Club’s winter league on Saturday, the Elgin pensioner holed his tee shot at the 134-yard fourth.
It was Ernie’s second ace – the first coming at Strathpeffer more than 25 years ago – but the first time he has experienced the joy of seeing his shot land in the cup.
“The one at Strathpeffer was on a blind hole, so I didn’t know until I arrived on the green,” he said. “This one was much better, being able to watch it go in. It was brilliant.”
Ernie’s hole-in-one, using a six iron, was also witnessed by playing partners George Dewar and Morris Mann, who, he said, joined in his celebrations when the ball disappeared from view on the green.
“There’s always an element of luck with these things, but it was a well-hit shot which was always going towards the pin.
“I thought it might just go past but then it suddenly vanished. I think there was someone putting on a nearby green so we might have put him off, because we all shouted out when my shot went in. It was a special occasion, and a magnificent feeling.”
Ernie, who turns 80 in November, has been a member at Garmouth & Kingston for six years and plays twice a week.
