A SHOOTING star in Germany, Moray marksman Will Stewart is setting his sights on an Olympic and Commonwealth bullseye.

The 15-year-old Gordonstoun pupil is the youngest member of the Scotland under-21 shooting team he was first chosen to represent at the tender age of 12.

Recently Will outshone a number of older competitors in the ISAS Open international to finish 10th in the junior air rifle prone competition in Germany.

Now he has targeted a place in Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games and the British team taking part in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro two years later.

A member of the Forres Smallbore Rifle and Elgin Miniature Rifle Clubs in Moray, the schoolboy has been shooting for six years, and was chosen to take part in his first overseas event in Dortmund earlier this year.

“It was a great experience for me, and very different from anything I’ve done before,” he said. “It showed me how far Germany are ahead of us in terms of training facilities and equipment.

“Some of the adults there were Olympic and World Champions, so getting the chance to meet them and speak to them about their experiences was great.”

Will suffered a setback in the prone competition when he sustained damage to the sights of his rifle, leading to a below-par performance and elimination in the first round. However, in the air rifle event he found much greater accuracy and finished in the top ten.
