Gunn netted all four City goals in an impressive 4-1 over Berwick Rangers which had manager Ross Jack beaming from ear to ear.

"That's an unbelievable start to the season," Jack said after the match. "From the word go the appetite and the desire of the team was first class.

"I would have taken a scrappy 1-0 win and three points but it turned out that the team did everything that was asked of them and more. It was a tremendous performance."

There was a hint of dubiety about Gunn's opening goal on 17 minutes, which the striker claimed despite the aid of a huge deflection off Berwick stopper Chris McLeod.

Within a couple of minutes City were further in front as Daniel Moore was fouled in the box for a penalty which Gunn gleefully swept home.

The front man completed his hat-trick with a simple back post finish on 51 minutes and grabbed a fourth with a powerful header 20 minutes from time.

Berwick pulled one back through Paul Currie late on, but it did little to dampen the atmosphere of enthusiasm about Borough Briggs at full time.

It was the first time since 2004 that Elgin had got their Scottish League campaign off to a winning start, and manager Jack hailed the contribution of the clinical Gunn.

"When he's on song and high like that, Craig is unstoppable. Nobody can live with his pace and when his head's up and he's got the confidence, he will always score goals.

"But I don't want to single him out as everyone was excellent today."

Elgin's attention turns to the Ramsdens Cup on Tuesday night, where they will visit East Fife after pulling off a big shock in the last round by beating holders Ross County.
