A SUPER hat-trick by Craig Gunn propelled Elgin City back into the promotion play-off places.

City's 3-2 win at Montrose was their fourth consecutive victory and saw them leapfrog Annan into fourth place.

Gunn took his tally for the season to 18 with goals on 6, 42 and 70 minutes.

Montrose twice levelled through Terry Masson (29) and Martin Boyle (51) but City would not be denied.

Boss Ross Jack told 'The Scot': "I am so proud of the boys the way they have put things together the last couple of weeks.

"It wasn't pretty but it was a great win. We had 13 heroes out there who put their bodies on the line.

"Craig came up with three great finishes and all his goals came from quality passes."

The win lifted Elgin above Annan who slumped to defeat at Peterhead.

"It is great to get back in to the top four. We have worked so hard to get there and we will have to work even harder now to stay there," added Jack.

"It was an almighty team performance and dispelled the myth that we can't play on an artificial pitch."

After struggling to notch just one away win in the first six months of the season, City have now recorded back to back wins on the road in the space of five days.

They are now firmly back in the promotion hunt and have a home game against Clyde at Borough Briggs on Tuesday night.

"We are not getting carried away. We have to keep doing our job but it is back in our own hands again," said Jack.

Elgin trail third placed Queens Park by three points and have a game in hand, while they are five points adrift of second placed Stranraer but have two games in hand.

Other div 3 results: Alloa Athletic 1, Clyde 0; Berwick Rangers 0, East Stirling 2; Peterhead 3, Annan Athletic 2; Queens Park 3, Stranraer 2.

Elgin: Clark, Niven, Durnan, Duff, MacPhee, Cameron (McMullan), Millar (Crooks),, Nicolson, Moore, Leslie, Gunn. Subs not used: Black, Wilson, McLean..
