Without a league win since January 2, and slipping further down the table in recent weeks, City sprang back up to fifth after their best result of the campaign.

Sons started the day three points clear at the top and had already beaten Elgin 4-0 at Borough Briggs this season.

City showed no signs of weariness from their poor 3-0 defeat at Albion Rovers on Tuesday night as they took the game to their hosts.

They made the vital breakthrough on 17 minutes and who else but ace marksman Kane Hester to net the goal.

Hester became the highest scoring City scorer for a season in their SPFL era by poking home his 27th strike of an incredible campaign.

Hester came close to a second while Mitch Taylor was denied by a double save from ex-City keeper Brett Long as the visitors continued to impress.

Rory MacEwan and Hester both came close for a dominant City but against the run of play, Ryan Blair levelled on the stroke of half time with a fine free kick.

However five minutes after the break, Taylor was fouled by Stuart Carswell in the Dumbarton box for a penalty which Russell Dingwall converted to regain the lead for City.

The Black and Whites were able to repel everything thrown at them by the leaders for the remainder of the half to hold on for a crucial three points.
