Highland League round-up: Forres Mechanics move up the table with win
A POSITIVE end to a difficult season is on the cards for Forres Mechanics after a 3-1 victory over Wick Academy at Mosset Park.
While much of the league’s focus was on the title race and Buckie Thistle going top with a 7-0 win at Strathspey, Forres recorded their first home win since August.
Goals from Calum Howarth, Craig Mackenzie and Ben Kelly gave Forres three points that moved them up to 15th in the table.
Manager Steven MacDonald has talked about ending the campaign with “some wins and positivity” and his players delivered last night.
Forres were ahead after 12 minutes through Howarth’s header, but were pegged back on the hour mark by Marc MacGregor’s effort.
A penalty from Mackenzie had Forres ahead just minutes later, before Nairn loanee Kelly sealed the points for Mechanics on 88 minutes.
Forres have another home match with Turriff United on Saturday. The Cans can still finish anywhere from 14th to 16th.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night, Fraserburgh kept tiny hopes of a title alive with a 2-0 win over Brora Rangers at Bellslea Park.
The Broch need to beat Strathspey Thistle by eight or nine goals on Saturday (depending on goals scored elsewhere) and hope both Buckie and Brechin lose.
Formartine United and Inverurie Locos drew 1-1 at North Lodge Park in the night’s other game.
