IT WAS a home club treble in the Moray Open.

From an original field of 336 competitors, the three trophies all went to Moray members.

David Main lifted the Northern Amateur Cup in the scratch section after beating Jeff Wright, winner of the Elgin 5 Day Open, 2&1 in the final.

Main, playing in his second final, had seen off Elgin’s Jordan Milne 3&2 in the semi-final.

After putting his approach stone dead at the opening hole he took a lead which he never relinquished. His opponent, Jeff Wright, of Forres, but a member at Moray and winner last week at Elgin, found himself four down after seven but then rallied as Main’s grip on was loosened briefly.

However, after he lost the 11th he was again two down. The 16th hole effectively settled the outcome. Just short of the road he put his approach 10 feet behind the hole, player and caddie agreed the line and down went the putt.

A seven iron at the next (par 5) to 12 feet on the second shot set up a winning birdie four and the win by 2/1.

Craig Smith won the handicap section 1 trophy (Challenge Bowl), beating fellow Moray member Andrew Lallement 3&2.

And completing the hat-trick of home winners was Sam McKenzie, who won another all Moray final, beating Paul Page at the 19th hole in the handicap 2 competition (Ross Anderson Cup).

Adam Dunton’s hopes of a first Moray Open win were dashed after losing on the 7th extra hole to Robbie Sheils in the quarter-finals. He described the match as the best in which he had played.

He holed a 20 footer on the last before Sheils followed him in to set up extra holes.

Results, Scratch quarter finals: Robbie Sheils bt Adam Dunton (Mcdonald) @25th; Jeff Wright bt Malcolm Macleman 8&7; David Main beat D. Leith (Garmouth) 4&3; Jordan Milne beat B.A. Caldow @19th.

Semi-finals: Wright beat Shiels 2&1; Main beat Milne (Elgin) 3&2.

Handicap Section 1: C.J. Smith (Moray) beat E. Middleton (Moray) 2&1; A.D. Lallement (Moray) beat S. Ingram (Moray) 2 up.

Handicap Section 2: P.V. Page (Moray) beat G. Grant (Moray] 2&1; S McKenzie beat D. Youngs (Shrivenham Park) 4&2.
