ENTRY for this year’s Huntly Room to Run opened on Monday in the hope the event can go ahead in September.

Room to Run was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the race committee is hopeful restrictions will allow it to take place on September 4 this year.

A half marathon, a 10k, a 5k and three children’s races are due to go ahead.

Between 1000 and 1300 competitors normally take part in Room to Run, with many more people enjoying the Huntly Hairst which takes place simultaneously.

The committee is aware there are likely to be coronavirus-related restrictions and is planning, as much as possible, to deal with those.

Race organiser Bruce Murray, who leads the Huntly Sports Hub group, said: “We will have to prepare in a different way this year and will be following the guidelines that are set out at the time.

“We don’t know what those will be yet, but the indication is that things have started to open up. We are reckoning that by September it will be as back to as normal as we can be.

“The committee met 10 days ago to confirm that we are going to go for it. We will put any requirements in place that we need to and if things change – for example if there is another outbreak – then people will get their money back.”

People who entered for the 2020 event and did not opt to receive their cash back will be registered automatically for the September run. Interested runners are urged to register as soon as possible, with the run selling out every year since it started.

“We are not sure how confident people are to sign up right now, so we expect it to be slow to begin with,” Bruce added. “But there was a low uptake of money back from the cancelled event.

“It’s a very popular race in the north-east. People love the whole experience of the run plus the hairst – it’s a family day out.”
