SCOTLAND failed to shine on the Hampden stage, but the venue could prove to be the inspiration Elgin City need to mount a magnificent promotion challenge.
With seven games to go, City have a small mountain to climb to force their way into the play-off places at the end of the season.
They are eight points adrift of that crucial fourth place and have a game in hand over Berwick Rangers, the team currently occupying that coveted position.
However, manager Ross Jack refuses to throw in the towel and has challenged his players to go on a run which will catapult them into the top four.
He said: “We just have to go for it now.
“It is backs against the wall stuff and nobody will really give us a prayer.
“It is a massive challenge and to get promotion from this position would be one hell of an achievement.”
Jack insists the feat is not beyond his players but admits they will rely on other teams above them taking points off each other.
Elgin face Queens Park at Hampden on Saturday and are due a result against Gardner Speirs’ side, having lost their two home games 0-4 and 3-5 and drawn 1-1 on their last visit to Hampden.
“We certainly cannot afford to get beat and a point down there would not be disastrous with Tuesday’s home game against Clyde to come, but we will be going there with the ambition of getting all three points,” added Jack.
