SHUTTING the floodgates can help Rothes to open their Highland League account for the season this weekend.
Speysiders’ co-manager Paul Lamberton is getting sick of his team’s heavy defeats, and sees Saturday’s home game against Fort William as an opportunity to stop the rot.
The huge gulf in class between the league’s top and bottom clubs was shown in a true light last weekend when Rothes endured a 9-0 defeat away to Formartine United.
An altogether different challenge lies ahead for the Moray club as they host a Fort side who they have already defeated in the cup in July, and who also find themselves at the wrong end of the league table.
Lamberton and fellow boss Willie Duncan will welcome back four key players who missed the Formartine defeat, and are determined to lead their side to their first league points of the campaign.
“Results against Formartine are not going to dictate our season,” Lamberton said. “But the Fort game is a definite six-pointer, as people like to say.
“We beat them at the start of the season but by all accounts they have picked up of late. So they are probably going in as favourites.
“We had seven guys missing on Saturday and no team can cope with that. Even having one or two out has a big effect on us. We’ll have a few of them back to play Fort and our team will be stronger, so I can’t see there being a lot between the teams.
“I just hope our guys put in a positive performance and a response from Saturday, and if they give us everything they’ve got, hopefully it will be enough to give us our first win in the league.”
