RYDER Cup hopeful Paul Lawrie knows he will have an army of Moray golf fans supporting him in this week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

Castle Stuart hosts the tournament for the second year running, with Aberdonian Lawrie among the favourites to win after an excellent season so far.

The former Open champion has strong links with Moray, in particular Hopeman Golf Club, where he was once a junior club member and rates its picturesque 12th ‘Prieshach’ hole as his favourite par 3 in the world.

Lawrie told ‘The Northern Scot’ he has fond memories of his time in Hopeman, and is looking forward to meeting more of his Moray supporters at Castle Stuart this week.

“I used to go to Hopeman at weekends all the time when my mum and dad had a caravan up there for a number of years,” Paul recalled.

“I was pretty young then, and we used to go up there and play the course on Saturday and Sunday for a long, long time. That’s where my association with Moray comes from.

“My son and I went back a couple of years ago and played a match, and I realised how long it had been since I last played there. But I always enjoyed Hopeman and had great fun there.”
