BUCKIE Ladies are three points away from clinching an historic first league title after seeing off the challenge of Inverness Caledonian Thistle Women on Sunday.

A Catie Carter double was enough to secure the points in a close-run 2-1 win against the Highlanders. The result means that Buckie need just three points from their final three games.

Carter gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at half-time with Caley squaring things just after the break. Buckie responded quickly and restored their lead in game which had plenty of chances.

It was a far cry from the previous week's ring rusty return to league action which saw Buckie perform a last minute comeback against Orkney to win 4-3.

Buckie manager Mel Smith said: "The quines played so much better than against Orkney, they were really focused and had a far better attitude and tempo.

"They all had a good game. Catie scored a couple of peaches and could've had more, she was one-on-one with the keeper a couple of times.

"It was a close game and it was a good one to watch. We were delighted to see so many people coming along to support us, we really appreciated them coming along.

"The result makes it 11 wins out of 11 for us – three more points and we've got the league and cup double."

Buckie Ladies could be crowned league champions this Sunday when they make the trip along the A96 to face Nairn St Ninian.

Smith said: "Nairn are a good side; they've improved a lot and it'll be a tight game but we'll be looking to go into it with our usual high tempo and energy.

"The quines are just buzzing, there's a really good feeling and energy among the squad in training.

"It's a big game for us but we have to stay grounded and humble."
