LOSSIEMOUTH could have a brand-new strike force when Highland League football finally gets back on the park.

Manager Joe Russell has already signed ex-Ross County, Caley Thistle, Elgin City and Buckie Thistle attacker Martin Charlesworth, who his left club Huntly earlier this year.

The Coasters have also handed a trial to former Elgin front man and RAF serviceman Ben Cullen, who scored three Highland League goals during a loan spell at Rothes in 2017.

If Cullen proves his fitness and signs for the Moray club, he could compensate for Lossie’s loss of another airman, forward Kyle Willis who has been posted south for the next year.

“Ben has been doing the Strava stuff with the other RAF boys in the squad and he’ll be coming down when we get back to full training,” said Russell.

“Hopefully, he comes to us and turns out to be a good addition.”

“We’re disappointed to lose Kyle but it opens a door for someone else, and we’ve got Martin and hopefully Ben as well. Who knows there could be a new partnership there.

“We did create plenty of chances last year but never quite took them at the key points. Hopefully we can start getting our noses in front and that can give everyone a lift.”

Russell has high hopes that experienced signing Charlesworth can shake off injury problems which have dogged him for the past three years and help Lossie shake off their reputation of being light on the scoring front.

“Martin has been sending me his Strava times and he’s looking pretty sharp. Hopefully he can keep that fitness level up, and not picking up any injuries will be key for him this season.

“I think he’s given himself enough of a rest, he’s got himself into good enough shape so if he does catch a niggle it may not affect him as much as it did previously.”

The coast outfit have also signed defender Jared Kennedy, whose brother Niall is already at Lossie.
