A MORAY golf club can lay claim to having helped a Scots hopeful who tees up in The Open for the first time today.
Paul McKechnie (37), from the Braid Hills Golf Centre in Edinburgh, progressed from regional qualifying to take his place alongside greats like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood in the field at Royal Hoylake.
And if inspiration was needed for any young golfers out there, McKechnie’s victory last July in the Grant Investment Europro Tour event at Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth should provide that.
After years of trying to break through to the European Tour, McKechnie’s victory on the Moray links course helped him win a Challenge Tour card this season.
After nine events on the feeder tour for the main European Tour, McKechnie has earned just 5,325 Euros so far this season, however, he has been in good form in recent weeks and will be looking to make a name for himself at The Open.
McKechnie teed off at 10.43am today and is in second round action from 3.44pm on Friday.
